Morning October 29, 2009, on the campus of Chengnan Hope School, Shifang City, Sichuan Province, with a striking whiteboard and banner and fluttering colorful flags, students and teachers welcome a special group of visitors, a visiting group comprising members of Beijing Youth Development Foundation who are all donors from Beijing.
It is said that in the wake of catastrophic May 12 Wenchuan Earthquake, BYDF immediately launched a donation-soliciting event titled Help Students Return Schools, which received immediate response from all walks of life and donations of over 84.30 million RMB in total.
One year past, how the donations have been utilized has always been an issue of general concern to the general public. According to the one-to-one disaster relief arrangements by the central government and the unified arrangements by Beijing Municipal Government, BYDF handed the 64 million RMB monetary donations to Shifang City Government which Beijing Municipal Government is required to assist with disaster relief, which were used to build two Hope schools, Shifang Experimental Primary School with 25 million RMB donations and Chengnan Hope School with 39 million RMB donations. These two schools have been built in place and put into use as scheduled on September 1, 2009. It is learnt that Chengnan Hope School has 12774 m2 building area, a nine-year compulsory education school accommodating 1680 students. The Experimental Hope School has 7397.93 m2 building area and can accommodate 1350 students at one time.
To materialize the working principle of openness and transparency of BYDF and allow the donors to know how their donations have been utilized, BYDF headed a 50-member group comprising representatives of some donating organizations and donors and reports for a field observation on the premises of these two schools.
A ceremony for BYDF tour of observation and computer donation took place on the campus of Chengnan Hope School in the morning of October 29, where students tied scarlet red scarves around the necks of visitors and visitors conveyed the blessings and aspirations of Beijing donors to the students, hoping they can step out of the earthquake nightmare and embrace the days ahead with a strong, brave, positive and optimistic mind. Deng Yaping, assistant secretary of Communist Youth League Beijing Municipal Committee donated 60 computers to these two schools on behalf of BYDF.
Secretary of Communist Youth League Beijing Municipal Committee Wang Shaofeng delivered an inspiring speech. He said following the devastating May 12 Wenchuan Earthquake last year, CYL organizations, volunteer organizations and teenagers joined all Chinese people to meet the challenges and thus won high recognition from the wider society. Assisting Shifang City with disaster relief and recovery is a glorious mission the central government delegated to Beijing City and the Municipal League has been heading all league members and volunteers in the capital city to do whatever they can to help the disaster victims in the first place. The completion of these two hope schools represents another effort made by Beijing CYL organizations to implement the instructions of the central government, Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Beijing Municipal Government on one-to-one assistance in rebuilding the homes with Shifang City residents. He encouraged students to face the reality with extraordinarily tough and strong will and convert sorrows into strength to rebuild their homes with unremitting determination, expecting them to study diligently and live happily and transform the ardent concern of the general public into endless motivation to fight through difficulties and rebuild a harmonious and beautiful neighborhood.
After the ceremony, the members of the group were shown around the teaching buildings and school buildings of the two schools, gaining a deeper understanding of the current conditions of students. Afternoon, the observation group arrived at the ruins of earthquake at Chuanxindian to mourn for the deceased.
